Intro
I’m Mengyuan XIAO, a postdoctoral researcher at the Univerisity of Geneva (UniGE). My research interest is the formation and evolution of galaxies, particularly the most massive galaxies in the first billion years of the Universe after the Bing Bang. As Principal Investigator (PI), I am leading several programs -- collectively known as the 'Red Monsters' -- utilizing JWST, ALMA, and NOEMA to investigate these early massive galaxies. Additionally, I have been providing key contributions to multi-wavelength studies in JWST and ALMA Treasury programs, including FRESCO, PANORAMIC, and GOODS-ALMA.

Since January 2023, I have been working with Prof. Pascal Oesch in the ‘Galaxies at Cosmic Dawn’ research group. I am leading projects on early massive galaxies, including six successful proposals (more than 100 hours of JWST, ALMA, and NOEMA) as PI. I am also actively involved in the JWST FRESCO survey (PI: P. Oesch), and the JWST PANORAMIC survey (PI: C. Williams & P. Oesch). I did my Ph.D. at CEA-Saclay (France) and Nanjing University (China) under the supervision of Dr. David Elbaz and Prof. Qiusheng Gu. I defended my thesis in December 2022 and my dissertation was awarded as "Excellent Doctoral Thesis" by Nanjing University. During my Ph.D., I mainly focused on optically dark massive galaxies, contributing as a core member of the GOODS-ALMA survey team (PI: D. Elbaz). Meanwhile, in 2019, I conducted collaborative research on gas kinematics in a z = 2.5 (proto)cluster of galaxies during a three-month visit to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), working with Prof. Daisuke Iono and Prof. Tao Wang. Our collaboration remains active, and I am now also part of the NICE project (NOEMA formIng-Clusters Evolution survey; PIs: E. Daddi & T. Wang). Additionally, I have experience in studies of nearby galaxies from my early research career.
activities
The three "red monster" galaxies represent the core findings of my paper published in Nature — extremely massive and dusty galaxies in the first billion years after the Big Bang, indicating that the Universe is forming stars more efficiently than we expected. At the DEEP24 conference (Oct 2024), I am introducing the efficient formation of early massive galaxies --- the “too early, too massive” problem in the early universe. This is one of the most remarkable findings of the first two years of JWST.
